Sport and Fitness in Ponteland: Gyms, Clubs and Where to Play

For a village of its size, Ponteland is remarkably well provided for sport and fitness. Between a modern leisure centre, a cluster of independent gyms and studios, and a full set of long-standing sports clubs, there is somewhere to train, play or join in for almost every age and interest. The leisure centre: the hub

The natural starting point is Ponteland Leisure Centre, the town's modern sport and fitness hub. It has a six-lane 25-metre pool, a 100-station gym, a cycling studio, dance and fitness classes, a thermal spa, soft play and a Clip'N'Climb climbing wall, plus a full-size 3G outdoor pitch. Gyms and fitness studios

Beyond the leisure centre, Ponteland has a strong independent fitness scene. No1 Gym on Merton Road is a well-established members' gym known for its semi-private personal training. For something different, AIM Studio on Broadway in Darras Hall is a boutique reformer Pilates and yoga studio, while JL PhysioFit on the Meadowfield estate combines chartered physiotherapy with reformer Pilates classes taught by physios, a good option if you are training around an injury.

Rugby and football

Ponteland's team sports run deep. Ponteland Rugby Club, the Mighty Maroons, is based at the leisure centre and fields senior men's and women's sides along with a large minis and juniors section, welcoming everyone from tots to returning adults. On the football side, Ponteland United FC carries the town's name into the local leagues. Both are community clubs that actively encourage new players and volunteers.

Tennis and bowls

For racket sports, Ponteland Lawn Tennis Club at the Memorial Hall complex on Darras Road is an LTA-registered venue with accredited coaching and programmes for all ages. A short step away, Ponteland Bowling Club has been a fixture of village life since 1923, with one of the best flat greens in Northumberland and a warm welcome for beginners, free training, footwear and bowls are offered while you learn.

Golf

Ponteland is well placed for golf, too. Ponteland Golf Club is the town's own parkland course, while nearby Close House offers two championship courses in a country-estate setting, along with a wider leisure and events offer. Between them they cover everything from a friendly members' round to top-end golf on the doorstep.

Staying active in Ponteland

Add in the riverside paths, country walks and the leisure centre's classes, and it is easy to build an active week here without travelling far.
