Ponteland Leisure Centre and Library: The Town's Modern Heart

For a village of its size, Ponteland is unusually well served for modern community facilities, and that is largely down to a single major project. In December 2020, a multi-million-pound Northumberland County Council development, delivered alongside the adjoining schools campus, opened a brand-new leisure centre and library at the edge of the village. Built as a genuine one-stop location to learn, exercise and socialise, it has quickly become the practical heart of the town. Here is a guide to what's there.

Ponteland Leisure Centre

Ponteland Leisure Centre is the centrepiece, a large, modern facility run for the council by Active Northumberland. At its core is a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, with a separate learner pool and an aqua splash zone that make it a popular choice for family swimming and lessons. Away from the water there is a 100-station gym, a dedicated cycling studio for live and virtual classes, dance and fitness studios, and a thermal spa suite.

Families are especially well catered for: as well as the pools there is a large rainforest-themed soft-play area and a Clip'N'Climb climbing wall, plus a café to regroup in afterwards. Outside, a full-size 3G all-weather pitch adds to the sports offer. Opening hours and class timetables are best checked with the centre directly, as they vary between term time and holidays.

The library and community street

One of the nicest touches of the redevelopment is that Ponteland Public Library sits inside the building's indoor "community street", a covered public space with seating and a café, so a trip to borrow books can easily turn into a coffee and a catch-up. Bringing the library together with the leisure centre under one roof means the whole complex functions as a genuine community hub rather than just a sports centre, and it is an easy, warm place to spend time whatever the Northumberland weather is doing.

Library opening hours are set by Northumberland County Council and are worth checking before a visit, particularly for weekend and evening access.

Ponteland Memorial Hall

The modern complex complements, rather than replaces, the town's long-standing community venue. Ponteland Memorial Hall remains an important space for local clubs, classes, private hire and events, and is often where you'll find the village's grassroots groups meeting. Between the two, Ponteland is well provided with places for everything from toddler groups and fitness classes to fairs and community meetings.

A one-stop civic heart

What makes the leisure centre and library development stand out is how much it packs into one place: swimming and sport, a gym and spa, children's play, a library and cafés, all designed to be used across generations and shared with the neighbouring schools.
