Volunteer Groups in Ponteland
Where to volunteer in Ponteland and Darras Hall, from monthly litter picks and the volunteer-run Memorial Hall to the hospice charity shop, Scout leaders and grassroots sports clubs.
A surprising amount of what makes Ponteland work is done by people who are not paid to do it. The Memorial Hall is run by volunteer trustees, the hospice shop on Merton Road is staffed largely by volunteers, and the riverside and verges stay tidier because a group of residents turns out in hi-vis once a month. If you have a few spare hours, there is almost certainly a local group that would be glad of them.
This guide covers the volunteering groups we could confirm are active in and around Ponteland and Darras Hall in 2026, what kind of help each one needs, and how to get in touch.
Where to start: Northumberland CVA
If you are not sure what you want to do, the county's volunteer centre is a sensible first stop. Northumberland Community Voluntary Action (NCVA) works with more than 150 charities and community groups across the county, and its I want to volunteer page has a search tool for current opportunities. You can also call the team on 01670 858688. For people who are new to volunteering or have found it hard to get started, NCVA runs a Supported Volunteering programme to help build confidence and find a suitable role.
Best for: Best for: browsing roles across Northumberland before committing to one group.
Environment and the outdoors
Ponteland Anti-Litter Squad
The Ponteland Anti-Litter Squad, known locally as PALS, was set up in 2024 as a voluntary community association and has grown from a handful of friends to more than 50 members. Its monthly patrols collected 1,418 kilos of rubbish between April 2025 and March 2026, including thousands of cans and bottles and hundreds of discarded vapes. You can read more in our story on the litter squad's first two years.
The squad meets on the third Sunday of each month. When it launched, picks started from the car park off Callerton Lane beside the children's play park and Henry's Hut, running from noon to 1.30pm, so it is worth checking the latest arrangements on our events calendar before you go. The group also works with local schools, Duke of Edinburgh's Award participants and businesses.
Best for: Best for: a sociable, low-commitment hour outdoors once a month.
Community venues and events
Ponteland Memorial Hall
Ponteland Memorial Hall on Darras Road has been at the heart of village life for over a century, and it is run by volunteer trustees for the community. The hall publishes a list of the help it needs, and it covers a wide range of skills:
- Services: gardening, grounds maintenance, DIY, hall checks and showing prospective hirers around
- Community: marketing, poster design, social media, leaflet drops and the website
- Event support: planning and running events, raffles and sponsorship, including admin for the Winter Ale Festival
- Finance and development: grant applications and administration
- Bar: helping run the bar at events
To offer your time, email info@pontelandmemorialhall.com or call 01661 822603. The hall is also home to the Christmas Market, which carries on under new organisers after Community Rotary Ponteland closed.
Best for: Best for: practical, creative or admin skills put to work for the whole village.
Charity shops and care
Tynedale Hospice at Home
The Tynedale Hospice at Home shop at 2 Merton Road reopened in May 2026 after a major refurbishment and extension. The charity provides end-of-life nursing in people's own homes, along with bereavement and dementia support, and its shops raise money for that care. Its shops have long been run by volunteers, and the charity recruits retail volunteers for its shops as well as admin help at its Hexham office.
The simplest way in is to pop into the shop or call it on 01661 822556. The charity's head office in Hexham is on 01434 600388.
Best for: Best for: regular weekday shifts and a friendly team on Ponteland's main shopping street.
Young people
1st Ponteland Scout Group
1st Ponteland Scout Group runs Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from its headquarters in Ponteland Park, and as the group itself puts it, the more leaders it has, the more young people it can give opportunities to. Volunteers come from all walks of life, no previous experience is needed, and the group provides ongoing training. Roles range from helping out on section nights to behind-the-scenes support. Email info@pontelandscouts.uk to ask what is needed.
Girlguiding units in the area are similarly reliant on adult helpers, and you can register as a volunteer through girlguiding.org.uk. Our parents' guide to Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs and Scouts explains how the local sections fit together.
Best for: Best for: anyone who wants to give children the outdoor adventures they remember from their own childhood.
Sport
Grassroots sport in Ponteland runs almost entirely on volunteers. Ponteland United FC, which plays at the leisure centre on Callerton Lane, has a large junior section and welcomes new coaches, team managers and matchday helpers each season. Ponteland Rugby Club, the Mighty Maroons, is also based at the leisure centre and runs senior sides alongside a full minis and juniors section, and like most community clubs it relies on members and parents to keep things running.
If your children already play, asking the coach how you can help is usually the quickest route in. Coaching qualifications and safeguarding checks are normally arranged through the club.
Best for: Best for: parents and former players who want to give something back on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Village traditions
Some of Ponteland's best-loved events are now run by new hands. The annual Duck Race in Ponteland Park has been taken on by The Sunshine Fund, and the Santa's Sleigh collection continues with Ponteland Round Table. Events like these always need marshals, stewards and collectors, so keep an eye on the organisers' appeals in the weeks before each one.
Tips before you sign up
- Start small. Many groups are happy for you to try a single session before committing.
- Expect checks for some roles. Work with children usually needs a DBS check, which the organisation arranges.
- Ask about expenses. Many charities reimburse reasonable costs such as travel, so it is worth asking.
- Think about trusteeship. Small local charities often struggle to fill committee roles, and treasurer and secretary skills are particularly valued.
