Ponteland Schools & the Private-School Commute

Ask most people why families move to Ponteland and the answer comes back quickly: the schools. It is the single strongest draw to the village, and it works on two levels, a well-regarded set of state schools on a genuinely unusual modern campus, and easy access to Newcastle's independent schools for families who go private. Here's the full picture.

The state schools

Ponteland is served by one secondary and three primaries.

• Ponteland High School is the state secondary and sixth form, for ages 11–18. Its most recent Ofsted inspection (May 2023) rated it Good.
• Darras Hall Primary School (ages 3–11), serving the Darras Hall estate, was rated Outstanding at its November 2023 inspection. It is an academy within the local Pele Trust.
• Richard Coates CE Primary School (ages 3–11) is a Church of England primary, also part of the Pele Trust, rated Good at its last inspection.
• Ponteland Primary School (ages 3–11) sits on the main Ponteland campus alongside the high school.

A note on admissions: catchment boundaries and oversubscription criteria change from year to year, so we deliberately don't quote distances or cut-offs here, always check the current criteria with Northumberland County Council and the school directly. (Ofsted also stopped giving a single overall grade for state schools inspected from September 2024, so newer reports read differently.)

The single-campus rebuild, what makes Ponteland unusual

Here's the distinctive part. In September 2020, Ponteland High School moved into a brand-new building on Callerton Lane that it shares with Ponteland Primary School and the Ponteland Leisure Centre and Library. Co-locating a secondary, a primary and a modern leisure-and-library facility on a single campus is nationally unusual, it came about as part of Northumberland County Council's reorganisation of the Ponteland-area schools from a three-tier (first / middle / high) to a two-tier (primary / secondary) system. For families, it means modern facilities and a swimming pool, gym and library all on the doorstep of the schools.

The private-school commute

Ponteland, and Darras Hall in particular, is also within an easy run of Newcastle's independent (fee-paying) schools, and a good number of local families choose that route. The main options are:

• Royal Grammar School (RGS), a fully co-educational independent day school (ages 7–18) in Jesmond.
• Newcastle High School for Girls, an independent girls' day school (ages 3–18) in Jesmond, part of the Girls' Day School Trust.
• Dame Allan's Schools, independent day schools in Fenham, founded in 1705, with a co-educational sixth form.
• Newcastle School for Boys, an independent boys' day school (ages 3–18) in Gosforth.

Getting into the city

The commute is very doable by public transport as well as car. Stagecoach North East runs services (the X77, X78 and X79) between Newcastle city centre and Ponteland / Darras Hall via Kingston Park and Cowgate, with some schoolday-only journeys. Timetables are seasonal, so check the current Stagecoach / Nexus timetable before relying on a particular journey.
