Best Places to Work Remotely in Ponteland

Where to take the laptop in Ponteland and Darras Hall, from Main Street and Broadway cafés with long opening hours to the free WiFi at Ponteland Library on Callerton Lane.

Ponteland.live·

Ponteland is a village full of people who work from home. Consultants, advisers, freelancers and hybrid commuters make up a big share of NE20, and most of them know the feeling: the kitchen table has stopped working and you need a change of scene for a few hours. Ponteland doesn't have a big-city coworking scene, but between the library, the leisure centre and a handful of good cafés on Main Street and Broadway, there are sensible places to set up. Here's where to go, and what to expect.

Ponteland Library

If you want free, reliable internet without the pressure to keep ordering, start at Ponteland Library. It sits inside the modern civic building on Callerton Lane (The Crescent, NE20 9EG), on the indoor "community street" it shares with the leisure centre.

Northumberland County Council offers free WiFi in most of its libraries. You don't need to be a library member to use it, but you'll be asked for an email address to log in. If you need a desktop, the public PCs come with internet access and Microsoft Office, and members get up to two hours a day free. Printing and photocopying are available too, in black and white and colour, though you can't print from your own device over the WiFi; you'll need to use a library computer.

One important caveat: the council's listing says computer and printing access at Ponteland is only available on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10am to 3.45pm. The listed access hours for the building are long (6am to 10pm on weekdays, 7am to 5pm at weekends, matching the leisure centre), but staffed services are much more limited, so ring 01670 622401 before planning a day around printing. For more on the building itself, see our guide to Ponteland Leisure Centre and Library.

Best for: Free WiFi, no need to buy anything, PCs and printing on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Ponteland Leisure Centre café

In the same building, Ponteland Leisure Centre has a café and a licensed bar. It's not a dedicated workspace, and at school-holiday peaks it will be busy with families coming off the soft play and out of the pool, but it makes a practical pairing with the library: work through the morning, then grab a coffee and lunch without leaving the building. The centre is open from 6am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm at weekends, though the café's own hours may be shorter.

It also suits anyone who likes to bookend the working day with a swim or a gym session.

Best for: Coffee and lunch next door to the library, with a swim or workout either side.

Vault & Vine

On Main Street, Vault & Vine at number 5 is the café with the most useful hours for a working day: it's open 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. It serves coffee, homemade food, pastries and cakes, so breakfast, lunch and an afternoon pick-me-up are all covered without moving.

Be aware that it's a family favourite with a dedicated children's playroom, so it can be lively, especially after school and at weekends. Early mornings are the calmest time to bring a laptop, and it's polite to keep ordering if you settle in for a while.

Best for: Long daily hours on Main Street, best for an early-morning session.

Elkwater Bar & Bistro

Over in Darras Hall, Elkwater Bar & Bistro at 33-35 Broadway opens at 8.30am on weekdays (9am at weekends) and runs from breakfast through to evening. Monday to Thursday it closes at 5pm, while on Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 11pm, so you can roll a late Friday session straight into an after-work drink.

The all-day format, with its French and Canadian-inspired menu and a lifestyle store attached, makes it a comfortable base for a morning of emails or a client catch-up over coffee. Evenings bring cocktails and sometimes live music, so it's a daytime option for actual work.

Best for: Darras Hall's all-day bistro, good for a morning session or a client coffee.

Davidson of Darras Hall

A few doors along at 11 Broadway, Davidson of Darras Hall is an artisan bakery and coffee shop serving barista coffee, a proper shop breakfast, sandwiches, homemade soup and cakes. It's more of a short-stay spot than an all-day office, but it's ideal for an hour with the laptop and a pastry, or for picking up lunch to take back to your desk at home.

Best for: Barista coffee and bakery food for a short, well-fed work session.

Also worth knowing

Sip'n'Loaf at 11 Main Street is a popular daytime brunch café, known for its posh toasties and pancakes. It's better suited to a working breakfast or a catch-up than a long laptop stint, especially at busy weekend times. Coworking and meeting space

We couldn't confirm a dedicated coworking space or hot-desking hub in Ponteland or Darras Hall itself. If you need a bookable desk or meeting room, Newcastle city centre, about 20 minutes away by car or bus, has a wide choice of coworking spaces. Advance Northumberland also manages commercial workspace across the county, and our guide to business support in Ponteland covers who to ask.

A Ponteland working day: start early at Vault & Vine with a coffee, head to the library on Callerton Lane for a focused stretch on the free WiFi, and grab lunch at the leisure centre café next door. On a Friday, finish with a drink at Elkwater.
