Running and Cycling in Ponteland: Routes and Where to Start
Quiet lanes, woodland paths and a new traffic-free route into Newcastle. A guide to running and cycling around Ponteland and Darras Hall, whatever your distance.
Ponteland is a rewarding place to run or cycle. The village sits where suburban Newcastle gives way to open Northumberland countryside, so quiet lanes, riverside paths and leafy avenues are all on the doorstep. Whether you are easing into a couch-to-5K or clocking up longer weekend miles, here is our guide to getting out on foot or two wheels around Ponteland and Darras Hall.
The Darras Hall avenues
The tree-lined roads and woodland paths of Darras Hall are a favourite for easy, traffic-light running and gentle cycling. The generous grass verges and quiet residential streets make for a safe, pleasant loop close to home, and the smooth woodland tracks are ideal for a steady recovery run or a family bike ride. It is the natural starting point for anyone building up distance.
Best for: Best for: quiet, low-traffic loops and family-friendly cycling.
Longer road routes
For those chasing miles, Ponteland is a well-known base for road running and cycling out into the countryside. Popular loops include the Darras Hall ten-miler and the Pele Tower circuit, which link the village to the surrounding lanes and hamlets. Heading north and west, the roads quickly open out towards Stamfordham and the Northumberland countryside, giving cyclists long, rolling routes with comparatively little traffic.
Best for: Best for: longer training runs and road-cycling loops into open countryside.
The Ponteland to Newcastle route
A newer, traffic-free walking and cycling route is being completed in phases to link Ponteland with Callerton and the Newcastle city boundary, connecting the town centre towards Callerton Parkway Metro station. Once finished it will give runners and cyclists a safe, off-road connection into the city, a real boost for anyone commuting by bike or wanting a longer car-free outing. It is worth checking the current status of the route before setting out, as sections have opened in stages.
Best for: Best for: a safer, traffic-free connection towards Newcastle.
