Golf Around Ponteland

For a village, Ponteland is remarkably well placed for golf, a long-established parkland club on its own doorstep, and one of the North East's premier championship resorts just a short drive away. Here's where to play.

Ponteland Golf Club

Ponteland Golf Club on Bell Villas is the village club, founded in 1927. It plays over an 18-hole parkland course of par 72, originally a 9-hole layout, it was extended to a full 18 in 1931 by Harry Fernie, son of the 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie. It's a members' club known for its greens and year-round playability, but it welcomes visitors, societies and open competitions, with visitor tee times bookable online.

Best for: Established 1927, 18-hole parkland, par 72, members' club that welcomes visitors.

Close House

A few miles away in the Tyne Valley at Heddon-on-the-Wall, Close House is a country-estate hotel and golf resort, and the region's headline venue. It has two courses, both bearing the name of golfer Lee Westwood, who calls Close House his home club: the championship par-71 Colt Course and the shorter par-70 Filly Course. The Colt Course twice hosted the European Tour's British Masters (2017 and 2020), the 2017 event setting a British Masters attendance record. As a resort it offers on-site accommodation and welcomes visitors and resort guests as well as members.

Best for: Lee Westwood's home resort, two courses and a two-time British Masters host.
