Famous People from Ponteland

Ponteland is an unusual case when it comes to famous names. The village and its neighbouring Darras Hall estate are perhaps better known for the celebrated people who have chosen to live here, footballers, businesspeople and broadcasters drawn by the leafy privacy of one of the North East's most desirable postcodes, than for those actually born and raised in the parish.

That said, Ponteland has quietly produced two genuine literary success stories, both educated at the same local schools. Here's a look at the famous faces connected to Ponteland.

Anna James

Children's author Anna James grew up in Ponteland and was educated at Ponteland Middle School and Ponteland High School before going on to become a books journalist and then a bestselling novelist.

She is best known for the Pages & Co. series, a six-book run published between 2018 and 2023 about a girl who can walk into the pages of her favourite stories. The books became international bestsellers and were translated into dozens of languages. James has since written the Chronicles of Whetherwhy series, and her Alice with a Why was shortlisted for the 2025 Waterstones Book of the Year. A genuine home-grown talent, and proof that a Ponteland childhood spent among books can go a long way.

Helen Bailey

Helen Bailey (1964–2016) was another author brought up in Ponteland and educated at Ponteland High School. She later recalled sitting and staring out of the classroom window, "dreaming of anything but lessons", daydreams that would eventually feed a prolific writing career.

Bailey published more than twenty books, most famously the teen-fiction Electra Brown series, along with the Willow the Woodsprite and Topaz series and contributions to the popular Felicity Wishes books. Her sharp, funny writing for young readers made her a firm favourite in school libraries. She died in 2016, aged 51.

The Darras Hall footballers

If Ponteland has a claim to fame beyond its authors, it is the exclusive Darras Hall estate, long a favoured home for Newcastle United players past and present. The estate's privacy, large plots and quick reach to the training ground and the airport have made it the North East's footballing address of choice.

Among its best-known residents over the years is Alan Shearer, the Premier League's all-time record goalscorer and Newcastle's record scorer, who made his home in Darras Hall (though he was born and raised a few miles away in Gosforth). Fellow Newcastle forward Peter Beardsley and European Cup-winning midfielder Terry McDermott are also among the football figures associated with the estate. It's fair to say more England caps have been earned by Darras Hall residents than by almost any comparable village in the country.

The Ponteland High School connection

As in so many towns, one school ties the story together. Ponteland High School educated both Anna James and Helen Bailey, and its roll of former pupils also includes professional footballer Neale McDermott, who came through the Newcastle United academy.

Not a bad record for a Northumberland village, two bestselling authors, and a village on the doorstep of Newcastle that half the club's dressing room has, at one time or another, called home.
