EV Charging Points in Ponteland
Where to charge an electric car in Ponteland and Darras Hall, from the rapid chargers at the leisure centre and Thornhill Road car park to Fastned's hub at Callerton Parkway, plus home and on-street charging.
Ponteland has quietly become a reasonable place to own an electric car. Plenty of homes in the village and Darras Hall have driveways, which makes overnight charging easy, and for everyone else there are now rapid chargers in two of the village's free car parks, a handful of slower posts on Callerton Lane, and one of the North East's biggest charging hubs a few minutes down the A696. Here is where to plug in.
A quick note before we start: charge point details and tariffs change often, so treat this as a map of where the chargers are rather than a price list. Check the operator's app or Zapmap for live availability and current prices before you set off.
Rapid charging in the village
Ponteland Leisure Centre, Callerton Lane
The car park at Ponteland Leisure Centre is the village's main charging spot. It has rapid charging on the Fuuse network, with a 50kW CCS connector (the plug most modern EVs use), a 50kW CHAdeMO connector for older Nissan Leafs and similar cars, and a 22kW Type 2 post. You pay through the Fuuse app or Zap-Pay.
The same car park also has a separate bank of slower 7kW Type 2 posts on the EV Charge.Online network. These suit a longer stay. The car park itself is free, and with the pool, gym, library and Waitrose all a short walk away, it is easy to fill the time while the car charges.
Best for: a rapid top-up while you swim, shop or visit the library.
Thornhill Road car park, off Merton Road
Over on the Darras Hall side, the council car park on Thornhill Road (entered from Merton Road) has its own Fuuse rapid set-up: a 50kW CCS connector, a 50kW CHAdeMO connector and a 22kW Type 2 post. It is handy for the Merton Way shops, and parking is free, though part of the car park is a 3-hour short-stay disc zone, so check the signs. Our guide to parking in Ponteland covers the village car parks in more detail.
Best for: Darras Hall drivers who want a rapid charge near the Merton Way shops.
Slower chargers around the village
Ponteland High School, Callerton Lane
Zapmap lists two 7kW Type 2 charge points at Ponteland High School on Callerton Lane, also on the EV Charge.Online network. No public access hours are given, and this is a school site, so treat it as a back-up and check the app before relying on it.
Best for: a slow top-up near the leisure campus if the leisure centre posts are busy.
Meadowfield Auto Centre, Meadowfield Industrial Estate
The independent garage Meadowfield Auto Centre has a single 22kW Type 2 charge point listed on Zapmap. It is available on weekdays only. At 22kW it suits a car being serviced or a few hours' top-up rather than a quick splash and dash.
Best for: topping up while the car is in for its MOT or a service.
Fastned at Callerton Parkway
For a fast charge on the way into Newcastle or to the airport, the best option nearby is the Fastned hub beside Callerton Parkway Metro station. Built on Newcastle International Airport land just off the A696, it opened in December 2025 with 12 ultra-rapid bays under a canopy, powered by renewable energy. It is a few minutes' drive from the village and sits next to the park-and-ride Metro, so you can leave the car charging and catch the train. Our getting around Ponteland guide has more on Callerton Parkway.
Best for: the quickest charge before a long trip, or before parking up for the Metro.
What about the supermarkets?
At the time of writing we could not find public charge points listed at Waitrose, Sainsbury's or the Co-op in Ponteland, or at Dobbies on the A696. Supermarket chargers are being added across the country, so it is worth checking Zapmap for any new sites, and we will update this guide if they appear.
Charging at home
For most Ponteland households with a driveway, a home wallbox is by far the cheapest and most convenient way to charge, especially on an off-peak electricity tariff. Installation should be done by a qualified, registered electrician. AK Electrical Contractors, a NAPIT-registered firm that covers Ponteland and Darras Hall, lists EV charger installation among its services, and our electricians guide covers other local firms.
Best for: households with off-street parking who want a wallbox fitted.
No driveway? On-street charging rules
If your home has no driveway or other off-street parking, Northumberland County Council has published on-street charging guidance for residents. In short:
- The council may licence a cable across the footpath under section 178 of the Highways Act 1980, and a key condition is using a cable protector.
- The cable must never cross the road, so you have to park on the same side as your home, as close to it as you can. The council recommends no more than about 10 metres of cable from where it leaves your property.
- Cables must lie flat, must not be run from an upstairs window or hung from lamp posts, bollards or trees, and must be removed as soon as the car is charged.
- Any liability is yours, so the council suggests checking that your home insurance covers it.
You still have to follow local parking restrictions and must not block the pavement. For anything not covered here, contact Northumberland County Council's highways team. The council has been adding on-street chargers in other Northumberland towns, but at the time of writing we could not find any on the streets of Ponteland itself.
