The Highlander is a family-run gastropub set in a former coaching inn dating back to the 1700s, standing on the A696 at Higham Dykes between Ponteland and Belsay. The building has been sympathetically restored, and the kitchen works to a seasonal menu built around local Northumbrian produce, with the Sunday roast and its trio of meats a particular draw. There are dog-friendly areas, a beer garden and generous space between tables.

As well as everyday dining it is set up for private and corporate hire, with the Green Room seating up to 24, the characterful Arches taking up to 30 and the restaurant up to 80, plus the option of exclusive use of the whole venue. There is no separate room-hire charge, only a minimum food and drink spend, and both buffet and seated formats are offered, which makes it a practical choice for a team meal or a Christmas party out of town. Check current opening times before travelling, as the pub is closed earlier in the week.
