New Town-Centre Car Park Plan for Ponteland Rejected

Plans to transform a vacant riverside site in Ponteland town centre into a public car park have been rejected by council planners.

The proposals for the half-acre site — historically associated with a house known as "Orchards", behind Vault & Vine — envisaged a pay-and-display car park of 62 spaces, including five accessible bays, with associated access, landscaping and works. The site, within the Ponteland Conservation Area, is currently open land used informally for parking.

Statutory objections came from the Environment Agency, over flood risk, and from the county highways department, which cited a lack of information on electric-vehicle bays and provision for larger vehicles and cycle parking. There were also public objections arguing there was already enough parking in the town centre.

Recommending refusal, the planning officer said the scheme was acceptable in principle in the village centre, but that insufficient information had been submitted on the impacts to the conservation area, highway safety, flood risk and ecology, and that it failed to respect the character of the surrounding heritage area.
