Ponteland on Screen: Northumberland's Film and TV Country

Ponteland sits just north-west of Newcastle, a short hop from the airport and the point where the suburbs give way to open Northumberland. That location makes it an ideal base for one of Britain's great filming counties. Within an easy drive you can stand where Harry Potter first flew a broomstick, where Harrison Ford outran the Nazis, and where a dinosaur film built a Victorian manor. Alnwick Castle: Hogwarts and Downton

The most famous credit of all sits about 40 minutes north. Alnwick Castle stood in for the exterior of Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films, and its Outer Bailey is where Madam Hooch teaches that first flying lesson. Later it became Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey, hosting the Crawleys for a shooting weekend across Series 5 and the 2015 Christmas special. It has also appeared in Transformers: The Last Knight, Elizabeth and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Bamburgh Castle: Indiana Jones and Bebbanburg

Further up the coast, Bamburgh Castle looms over its beach and has become a location in demand. In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) the castle and its dunes doubled for wartime scenes in the film's opening, with Harrison Ford on set. It plays Bebbanburg in Netflix's The Last Kingdom, which is historically apt, and it appears as Macbeth's stronghold at Dunsinane in the 2015 Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender. The sweep of sand, sea and Norman keep needs almost no set dressing.

Cragside: a Victorian manor for Jurassic World

Closer to home, the National Trust's Cragside near Rothbury was the first house in the world lit by hydroelectric power, and its dramatic Tudor-Gothic frontage made it a natural fit for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), where it stood in for Lockwood Manor. It is one of the most atmospheric days out from Ponteland, all rhododendron drives, rock gardens and clanking Victorian machinery.

Vera along the coast and causeway

Northumberland's landscape is a character in its own right in ITV's long-running crime drama Vera. Brenda Blethyn's detective is filmed the length of the county, from Newcastle's Quayside to the fishing villages of Amble and Alnmouth and the Farne Islands. Vera's windswept home is on Lindisfarne, the tidal Holy Island reached by its famous causeway, which the detectives are often seen crossing.

Grand houses on the doorstep

Two English Heritage and National Trust properties within a short drive are worth knowing for their period looks. Belsay Hall, barely ten minutes from Ponteland, is a striking Greek Revival house with a quarry garden and a ruined medieval castle, a favourite backdrop for photographers and period productions. Wallington, west of Morpeth, is a handsome country house and estate whose halls and grounds have drawn location scouts over the years. Both make good companions to a film-themed day out.

Planning your screen tour from Ponteland

Ponteland's road links make a day of it straightforward. Belsay and Wallington are the quickest hops; Cragside and Alnwick sit together on a northern loop; and Bamburgh with Lindisfarne make a full day on the coast, so check the Holy Island crossing times before you set off. Several operators run guided Vera and Harry Potter location tours from Newcastle if you would rather not drive.

Best for: Alnwick Castle is generally open from late March to the end of October, while Cragside, Belsay and Wallington vary by season. Check each property's website for opening dates and ticket prices before travelling.
