A Guide to Ponteland's High Street & Shops
Main Street, Bell Villas, Merton Road and the Broadway parade in Darras Hall — a guide to the independent shops, bakeries, cafés and services that make up Ponteland's high street.
Ponteland's high street is one of the things that makes the town feel like a proper town rather than a commuter suburb. Retail is spread across a handful of areas — Main Street and Bell Villas in the village, the Merton Road parade, and the Broadway shops in Darras Hall — with a good showing of independents among them. Here is a guide to what is where.
Main Street & Bell Villas
The village centre is the heart of things. Alongside the restaurants and pubs, Main Street is where you will find independent cafés for coffee and brunch — Vault & Vine (in the former Cafe by Design unit, complete with a kids' playroom) and Sip'n'Loaf, known for its posh toasties and pancakes. Geoff Steven & Sons provides independent opticians on Main Street, and tucked just off it on Brewery Lane is the independent Taylors Pharmacy.
Merton Road
The Merton Road parade adds to the everyday offer, with salons and services including hairdressers and beauty — a handy cluster a short walk from the centre. See our directory for the full list.
Broadway, Darras Hall
The Broadway parade is Darras Hall's own little high street. It is home to Carousel Gifts for cards and gifts, the excellent Davidson of Darras Hall bakery and coffee shop for fresh bread, cakes and pies, and a row of restaurants and services — a genuinely useful parade that means Darras Hall residents rarely need to leave the estate for the essentials.
Flowers and gifts
For flowers, Northumberland Flower Studio is a Ponteland florist offering bouquets, arrangements and local delivery — worth knowing for birthdays, anniversaries and last-minute occasions.
The bigger shops
For a full supermarket shop, a Waitrose anchors the modern civic centre alongside the leisure centre and library — the result of Ponteland's town-centre redevelopment — so you have national names on hand as well as the independents.
Shop local
Ponteland's independents are exactly the kind of businesses that keep a high street alive. Next time you need a gift, a loaf, a haircut or a coffee, it is worth starting on Main Street or Broadway before heading anywhere else. Browse them all in our local directory.
