The Best Photography Spots in Ponteland

Ponteland is more photogenic than a quick drive-through suggests. The village grew up around a river crossing, so water, stone and greenery are never far apart, and the surrounding countryside opens out quickly into classic Northumberland scenery. Ponteland Bridge and the River Pont

The old bridge over the River Pont, with the Diamond Inn beyond and the water threading through the heart of the village, is the classic Ponteland shot, and the view above. It is at its best in soft morning light or on a still day when the river reflects the bridge and buildings. The riverside paths give plenty of angles, and the changing seasons, from spring blossom to autumn colour, keep it fresh.

St Mary's Church and the Vicar's Pele

The Norman church of St Mary the Virgin, with its ancient stonework by the river, and the neighbouring 14th-century Vicar's Pele tower, make a wonderfully atmospheric subject, especially in low, raking light that picks out the old masonry. The churchyard offers framing through trees and gravestones for a more evocative composition.

The Blackbird and the castle remains

For a shot with a story, The Blackbird on North Road incorporates the remains of Ponteland's medieval castle, so its old stone walls and character make a rewarding subject, particularly lit up on a winter evening.

Ponteland Park and the riverside

Ponteland Park and the green corridor along the Pont are ideal for nature and seasonal photography, from reflections and wildlife to blossom and autumn leaves. It is also the easiest spot for a relaxed walk-and-shoot with the family.

Countryside and Kirkley Hall

Head just out of the village and the Northumberland countryside delivers big skies, dry-stone walls and rolling farmland, especially along the lanes towards Darras Hall and Stamfordham. The grounds around Kirkley Hall add mature trees, a Georgian house and gardens to the mix.

A few tips

Early morning and the hour before sunset give the kindest light, and Ponteland's riverside is especially good after rain when the Pont is full.
