The Best Walks Around Ponteland

Ponteland sits where the Newcastle suburbs give way to open Northumberland countryside, so there's greenery and good walking right on the doorstep, from a gentle riverside loop in the village to a converted railway line and a well-known birdwatching wetland. Here are the best walks around Ponteland.

Ponteland Park & the River Pont

The obvious place to start. Ponteland Park is the largest green space in the town, around 18 acres of woodland and open grass owned by Ponteland Town Council, with paths running alongside the River Pont in the heart of the village. It's a short, mostly flat stroll, popular with dog walkers and families, and can be linked with the streets and the old railway path for a longer loop. (It can get muddy after rain.)

Best for: A gentle riverside walk in the village centre, 18 acres of park and woodland.

The old Darras Hall railway line

One of Ponteland's best walking (and cycling) routes follows the dismantled former railway line, the old North Eastern Railway Darras Hall branch, which closed to passengers back in 1929. Now a well-surfaced, level path, it runs south-west from near the River Pont in the town centre out through Darras Hall for over two miles. Walkers often combine it with the park and surrounding streets into a circular of around five miles.

Best for: A flat, well-surfaced former railway path, good for walking, running and cycling.

Prestwick Carr, birdwatching

Between Ponteland and Dinnington lies Prestwick Carr, a 49-hectare lowland wetland (a rare raised mire) partly managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust and famous among birdwatchers, for snipe and redshank, barn and short-eared owls, skylarks and, in winter, the celebrated Great Grey Shrikes. Important: this is not a walk-through reserve. There is no public access into the site itself; it's viewed from the minor road to the north and a viewing platform, and the approach lanes are in poor condition, go for the birds, not for a long ramble.

Best for: A renowned birdwatching wetland, view from the roadside, not a through-walk.

Kirkley Hall gardens

Kirkley Hall, a few miles north of the village, is a walk-through zoological gardens set in the grounds of the former agricultural college, with walled gardens, woodland and river walks and picnic areas. Note it's a ticketed visitor attraction rather than open countryside, but a lovely, gentle option for a family day with younger children.

Best for: Walled gardens and grounds to explore, a paid attraction, great with young children.

Dissington & the Medburn lanes

For a quieter country walk, the lanes west of Ponteland towards North Dissington and Medburn take you through open farmland along the River Pont, passing Dissington Bridge and the Grade II*-listed Dissington Hall. Field-and-lane walking that shows off the countryside just beyond the village.

Best for: Quiet country lanes and river scenery west of the village.
